How the map quiz works
In the default mode a country is filled in blue and circled, and you choose its name from four countries in the same region, which are usually its neighbours. This mode works with a keyboard (keys 1–4) and a screen reader’s button list, though the map itself is visual. In “find it” mode the map names a country and you click or tap it; a wrong click is marked in orange and the correct country is then highlighted.
29 countries are too small to click reliably as shapes and also appear as dots: Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahrain, Barbados, Cape Verde, Comoros, Dominica, Grenada, Kiribati, Liechtenstein, Maldives, Malta, Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Micronesia, Monaco, Nauru, Palau, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, San Marino, Sao Tome and Principe, Seychelles, Singapore, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vatican City. Grey areas without a country in the quiz, such as W. Sahara, Falkland Is., Greenland and Fr. S. Antarctic Lands, are drawn for context but are not asked about.
Clues for finding countries
- China and Russia have the most land neighbours here (14): find them first and the countries around fall into place.
- 44 countries are landlocked: Afghanistan, Andorra, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bhutan, Bolivia, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Czech Republic, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Lesotho, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malawi, Mali, Moldova, Mongolia, Nepal, Niger, North Macedonia, Paraguay, Rwanda, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, South Sudan, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Vatican City, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
- 40 countries have no land border at all. Look for them offshore.
- The quiz’s wrong options come from the same region, so learning each region’s outline (below) is the fastest way to improve.
Study list: neighbours of every country in the world
