Europe map quiz

Can you place all 47 countries of Europe? Name the highlighted country from four options, or switch to “find it” mode and click the country yourself. Small countries are shown as dots.

How the map quiz works

In the default mode a country is filled in blue and circled, and you choose its name from four countries in the same region, which are usually its neighbours. This mode works with a keyboard (keys 1–4) and a screen reader’s button list, though the map itself is visual. In “find it” mode the map names a country and you click or tap it; a wrong click is marked in orange and the correct country is then highlighted.

6 countries are too small to click reliably as shapes and also appear as dots: Andorra, Liechtenstein, Malta, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City. Grey areas without a country in the quiz, such as W. Sahara, Greenland, N. Cyprus and Kosovo, are drawn for context but are not asked about.

Clues for finding countries

  • Russia has the most land neighbours here (14): find it first and the countries around fall into place.
  • 16 countries are landlocked: Andorra, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Czech Republic, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Moldova, North Macedonia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Switzerland and Vatican City.
  • 2 countries have no land border at all: Iceland and Malta. Look for them offshore.
  • The quiz’s wrong options come from the same region, so learning each region’s outline (below) is the fastest way to improve.

Study list: neighbours of every country in Europe

Land neighbours are the best memory hook for a map quiz. Grouped by region; follow a country’s name for its profile and detailed maps.
