Every figure on this page was measured from the coastlines themselves rather than copied from anywhere, so a few of them will not match the numbers you have seen elsewhere — and we say exactly where, and why.

Three things the usual lists get wrong
- It is eleven countries, not thirteen.
- The thirteen you will see quoted almost everywhere adds the Maldives and Kiribati on the strength of their territorial waters. But the line misses their land: it passes 24 km north of the nearest Maldivian island and 15 km from the nearest island of Kiribati. Both countries have territory on both sides of the equator — the line simply slips between their atolls.
- São Tomé and Príncipe’s crossing is 1.6 km long.
- It happens entirely on Ilhéu das Rolas, a 2 km² islet off the southern tip of São Tomé. That is smaller than the resolution of any global coastline dataset — scan the standard boundary data and São Tomé drops off the list altogether, because the whole islet is drawn 2.7 km too far north. The crossing is real: it was surveyed by the Portuguese navigator Gago Coutinho between 1915 and 1918, and a monument stands on it. We add it back by hand rather than publish a count we know to be wrong.
- Uganda’s 468 km includes 176 km of Lake Victoria.
- Country borders run straight across lakes, so a naive measurement counts open water as land. Set the lake aside and Uganda has 292 km of actual ground on the equator — which changes where it sits in the ranking. It is the only country on the line whose figure is substantially inland water.

Equatorial Guinea is the one that catches everyone out. Its name says the equator and it is the only country on Earth named after the line, yet the mainland stops 103 km north of it and its island of Annobón lies 158 km south. The equator passes cleanly between the two, over open Atlantic.

Peru misses by 3.2 km. Its northernmost point, on the Putumayo river at the Colombian border, sits at 0.029° south — close enough that a brisk walk would get you there, and the reason Peru is the great almost of equatorial geography.

What the equator actually is
The equator is the set of points halfway between the North and South Poles — the circle you get by slicing the planet through its centre, perpendicular to its axis of rotation. Every other line of latitude is a small circle that shrinks towards the poles; only the equator is a great circle, the largest circle that can be drawn on a sphere. It is the zero from which all latitude is counted, which is why it is the one parallel with a name rather than a number.
Its length, 40,075 km, is not the same as a circle drawn through both poles, which comes out about 67 km shorter. The Earth is not a sphere: it spins once a day, and that spin has pushed its middle outwards. The planet's radius is 21 km greater at the equator than it is at the poles. One consequence is a favourite piece of trivia — the summit of Chimborazo in Ecuador, only 6,263 m above sea level, is the point on the Earth's surface farthest from its centre, beating Everest by about two kilometres, purely because it sits on the bulge.
Why the equator has no seasons
Two things set equatorial climate apart, and both come down to geometry. The first is the angle of the sunlight: at latitude zero the sun is never far from vertical, so a given beam of sunlight lands on the smallest possible patch of ground and delivers the most energy per square metre. The second is constancy. Because the equator is the axis the Earth's tilt pivots around, day length there barely moves all year — roughly twelve hours of daylight and twelve of darkness, every day, with a variation of only a few minutes.
So the equator does not have a summer and a winter; it has a wet season and a dry season, and often two of each. What changes through the year is not the heat but the rain, as the Intertropical Convergence Zone — the band where the trade winds of the two hemispheres collide and force air upwards — drifts north and south with the sun. Where that band lingers, you get the rainforests: the Amazon, the Congo Basin, the forests of Borneo and Sumatra. It is no coincidence that the equator threads through the three great rainforest blocks on Earth, or that several of the countries it crosses appear on our list of megadiverse countries.
Altitude undoes all of it, though. Quito sits 24 km from the equator at 2,850 m and is mild the year round; and on Volcán Cayambe, an hour north of the city, the equator runs straight across a glacier at about 4,600 m. It is the only point on the whole line where there is permanent ice.
Standing on the line
The equator is marked in a dozen countries, and the most famous marker is in the wrong place. The Mitad del Mundo monument outside Quito, built in 1979 on a survey dating to the French Geodesic Mission of the 1730s, carries a painted line that visitors queue to straddle. Satellite positioning has since shown the real equator to be about 240 metres north of it. The error is a fair one — the 18th-century surveyors were working with sightings of the stars and got within a few hundred metres — but it does mean the photographs are taken in the southern hemisphere.
Twenty kilometres away at Cayambe, the Quitsato sundial is built on the line as GPS finds it, and a phone will show 0°00'00" there. Elsewhere: a monument stands on Ilhéu das Rolas in São Tomé and Príncipe, where the crossing is only 1.6 km wide; Pontianak in Indonesia has marked its equator since 1928; and the highway between Nanyuki and Nairobi carries the sign where most visitors to Kenya meet the line — along with the basin-and-bucket demonstration discussed below.
The draining-water trick
At equator markers from Kenya to Ecuador, a guide will carry a basin a few paces north of the line and let it drain clockwise, carry it a few paces south and let it drain anticlockwise, then set it on the line and show it draining straight down. It is a good trick and it is entirely fake.
The Coriolis effect is real: because the Earth rotates, anything moving across its surface is deflected, right in the northern hemisphere and left in the southern. It is why hurricanes spin the way they do and why ocean gyres turn. But its strength scales with the size and duration of the motion, and in a basin of water it is something like ten million times weaker than the swirl left over from how the water was poured in. Move the basin twenty metres and nothing measurable changes — what changes is the direction the guide pours, and the tilt of their hands. The effect also falls to exactly zero at the equator, which makes the middle part of the demonstration the only honest bit.
Why latitude zero is worth money
The equator is not only a line on a map. The ground there is moving east at 465 metres per second as the planet turns — faster than anywhere else on Earth — and a rocket launched eastward keeps every bit of that as free velocity. It is the reason Europe launches from Kourou in French Guiana rather than from Europe, and one reason Cape Canaveral sits at the southern end of the United States.
There is a second reason, which matters more. A satellite in geostationary orbit — hovering above a fixed point on the ground, which is what television and weather satellites need — can only do so directly above the equator, at 35,786 km up. Any orbit inclined away from that plane makes the satellite wander north and south through the day. Launching from close to the equator means starting almost in the right plane, and every degree of latitude you start from is fuel you have to spend correcting for.
The equator and the tropics
The equator is often drawn with two companions, and they are frequently confused with it. The Tropic of Cancer (23.44° N) and the Tropic of Capricorn (23.44° S) mark the furthest points at which the sun can ever be directly overhead — a limit set entirely by the tilt of the Earth's axis. Between them lies the tropical zone, shown as the warm band on the map above; outside them, the sun is always at least slightly off vertical, at every hour of every day of the year.
On the equator itself, the sun passes directly overhead twice a year, on the two equinoxes in March and September. At the tropics it happens once, at a solstice. And the two figures are not fixed: the Earth's tilt drifts slowly, so the tropics are creeping towards the equator at about 15 metres a year. The Arctic and Antarctic Circles, at 66.56° north and south, are the same geometry from the other end — the limits of where the sun can stay up, or stay down, for a full 24 hours.

78.61% of it. Measured against 1:10,000,000 coastlines, 8,573 km of the equator is land and 31,502 km is ocean. The single longest run without touching land is 15,477 km of Pacific — 39% of the whole circumference — from the eastern tip of Indonesia to the Galápagos.
Which country has the most of the equator?
Brazil, with 2,215 km — more than a quarter of all the land on the line. Indonesia is second at 1,465 km, but it is the more remarkable case: Brazil’s share is essentially one continuous run through the Amazon, while Indonesia’s is split across 10 separate landfalls as the line hops from Sumatra to Borneo to Sulawesi and on through the Moluccas.
Is there snow on the equator?
Yes, on three mountains. Volcán Cayambe in Ecuador is the only place where the equator itself runs across a glacier — its southern slope, at about 4,600 m, is permanently iced and is the coldest spot on the entire line. Mount Kenya (0.15° south) and the Rwenzori range on the Uganda–DR Congo border also hold ice within a few kilometres of it, though all three glaciers are retreating fast.
Why is the equator hot?
Because sunlight arrives close to vertical there all year. The same beam of sunlight that is spread thin across a slanted surface near the poles is concentrated into a much smaller patch at the equator, so each square metre of ground receives far more energy. The equator is also the one line on Earth where day length barely changes: it gets about 12 hours of daylight every day of the year, so there is no winter to let the heat out.
Does water really swirl the other way across the equator?
No. The demonstrations sold to tourists — a basin carried a few metres north and south of a painted line, draining one way and then the other — are sleight of hand, driven by how the water is poured in and how the basin is tilted. The Coriolis effect is real but vanishingly weak at that scale: it shapes hurricanes and ocean gyres over hundreds of kilometres, and is millions of times too feeble to beat the residual swirl in a bucket.
Which capital city is closest to the equator?
Quito, at about 24 km south of it — which is how Ecuador came by its name. Kampala (35 km), São Tomé (38 km) and Libreville (43 km) are the next nearest. No capital city sits exactly on the line.
Why do rockets launch from near the equator?
For a free push. The ground at the equator is already moving east at 465 metres per second as the Earth turns, and a rocket launched eastward keeps all of it — speed it would otherwise have to buy with fuel. That is why Europe launches from Kourou in French Guiana, 5° north, rather than from Europe. It also matters where you are going: satellites in geostationary orbit must sit directly above the equator, and the closer you start to it, the less fuel you burn bending the orbit flat.
What is the difference between the equator and the tropics?
The equator is the line halfway between the poles, at 0° latitude. The Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn sit 23.44° north and south of it, and they mark the limits of where the sun can ever be directly overhead — a boundary set by the tilt of the Earth’s axis. Between those two lines is the tropical zone; on the equator itself the sun passes directly overhead twice a year, at the two equinoxes.
How these numbers were measured
Nothing on this page is copied from another site. Every distance was computed from Natural Earth 1:10,000,000 coastlines (public domain) by walking every polygon edge in the dataset, solving for the longitude at which it crosses latitude zero, and then testing the midpoint of each resulting gap to decide whether that stretch is inside the country or outside it. Testing midpoints rather than trusting the direction the outlines are drawn in is what makes the method correct for lakes, enclaves and the thousands of islands in Indonesia.
Lengths along the equator are exact rather than approximate: the equator is a great circle, so one degree of longitude is 111.319 km at every point on it. Inland water was measured separately against Natural Earth's lakes so that Lake Victoria could be separated out from Uganda's and Kenya's totals. The one hand-made entry in the dataset is São Tomé and Príncipe's 1.6 km crossing of Ilhéu das Rolas, which is below the resolution of the source data and is flagged as a correction in the table above.
