All countries by continent

How many countries are there in the world?

There are 195 sovereign countries recognised by the international community today. Of these, 193 are member states of the United Nations, while two — the Holy See (Vatican City) and the State of Palestine — hold permanent observer status. At Countries.World we also profile Taiwan, for a total of 196 country profiles.

Each country is a territory with its own government, a permanent population, the capacity to enter relations with other states, and internationally recognised sovereignty. Beyond these, the world also contains dependent territories, autonomous regions and states with limited recognition, such as Kosovo and Western Sahara, whose political status remains debated.

The world organised by continent

The countries of the world are spread across five inhabited continents. Africa has the most countries (54), followed by Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. Asia is by far the most populous, home to well over half of humanity, while Oceania is the least populated. Explore each region to discover its geography, cultures and economies.
