Africa map quiz

Can you place all 54 countries of Africa? Name the highlighted country from four options, or switch to “find it” mode and click the country yourself. Small countries are shown as dots.

How the map quiz works

In the default mode a country is filled in blue and circled, and you choose its name from four countries in the same region, which are usually its neighbours. This mode works with a keyboard (keys 1–4) and a screen reader’s button list, though the map itself is visual. In “find it” mode the map names a country and you click or tap it; a wrong click is marked in orange and the correct country is then highlighted.

5 countries are too small to click reliably as shapes and also appear as dots: Cape Verde, Comoros, Mauritius, Sao Tome and Principe and Seychelles. Grey areas without a country in the quiz, such as W. Sahara, N. Cyprus, Somaliland and Kosovo, are drawn for context but are not asked about.

Clues for finding countries

  • The Democratic Republic of the Congo has the most land neighbours here (9): find it first and the countries around fall into place.
  • 16 countries are landlocked: Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mali, Niger, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • 6 countries have no land border at all: Cape Verde, Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Sao Tome and Principe and Seychelles. Look for them offshore.
  • The quiz’s wrong options come from the same region, so learning each region’s outline (below) is the fastest way to improve.
