Richest countries by total GDP

The United States and China are the largest economies in this 2024 nominal-GDP comparison. Total GDP measures the value of annual production. It answers how big an economy is, rather than how much wealth a typical resident owns.

2024 national accounts · Reviewed 1 October 2026 · Sources & methodology

How concentrated is economic output?

The United States produces $29.30T of annual output in this dataset, compared with $18.73T for China. Together they account for 43.7% of the GDP recorded for the countries included here. The ten largest economies account for 67.6%.

Those shares show concentration within the covered group. They are not labelled shares of world GDP because countries without 2024 observations and dependent territories are not included in the denominator. Summing only available country records and calling that total “the world” would overstate each included country’s share.

The ranking combines two ingredients: how many people an economy contains and how much output it generates per person. A large population can support a large total even with modest output per resident. Conversely, a small country can rank very highly per capita while contributing a small fraction of global production. This is why the per-capita ranking has a different set of leaders.

The GDP ranking and each country’s share

The figures are expressed in current US dollars using market exchange rates. All observations refer to 2024; a current review date does not turn them into 2026 output estimates. GDP is shown in full dollars in the table and retained at source precision in the download.

Countries close in value may exchange positions when national accounts are revised. Rank differences also hide scale: the gap between two neighbouring positions can be much larger near the top than farther down. Read the values and shares alongside the ordinal position before describing one economy as far larger than another.

What nominal GDP can and cannot explain

Exchange rates can change the ranking

When output measured in a national currency is converted into dollars, the exchange rate matters. A currency depreciation can lower dollar GDP without a matching fall in the volume of production. For changes over time, real GDP growth is a more suitable starting point; for local purchasing power across countries, consider PPP-adjusted GDP.

GDP is a flow, while wealth is a stock

GDP measures production during a year. National wealth concerns assets and liabilities accumulated over time, including resources and capital. A country can produce a great deal without every household owning substantial assets. Calling a GDP table a wealth ranking is therefore only a search shorthand, not the technical definition of the metric.

GDP does not measure how output is shared

A national total does not reveal household median income, inequality, access to services or the cost of housing. Even GDP per capita is an average of production rather than a typical salary. For a relocation or living-standards comparison, income distribution and prices belong alongside economic output.

Choose the ranking that matches your question

Use total nominal GDP when comparing economic output at market exchange rates. Use GDP per capita when population size would otherwise dominate the comparison. Use PPP measures when asking about the purchasing power of production, and use household income or consumption data when asking how residents live.

The distinction is practical: a business comparing total market scale may start with this table, but an individual comparing living standards would need different evidence. Neither question is answered by simply treating the highest GDP rank as the best country to live in.

Countries without 2024 GDP observations are excluded. Shares divide each country’s nominal GDP by the sum of the included observations. No regional aggregates are added, which would double-count their member countries.

  1. World Bank: GDP, current US dollars

Common-year 2024 national accounts observations, retrieved 27 September 2026. Countries with no observation are omitted, not assigned zero.

  2. World Bank national accounts metadata

Country lists follow our 196-profile directory convention: 193 UN members, Vatican City, Palestine and Taiwan. Dependent territories are identified separately. A missing observation never means zero.
