Richest countries by GDP per capita

The countries at the top of GDP-per-capita rankings are often small economies with substantial output relative to their resident populations. Compare the 2024 nominal ranking with purchasing-power-adjusted figures, then examine what those averages leave out.

What stands out at the top

Monaco leads the available 2024 observations at $288,002 per person, followed by Liechtenstein and Luxembourg. The United States, which leads the total GDP ranking, is in position 8 here. Dividing output by population changes the question and produces a substantially different order.

A small denominator makes the result sensitive to activities that generate considerable output with relatively few residents. Cross-border commuting, multinational production and resource extraction can all complicate the relationship between domestic output and residents’ living standards. These are measurement issues to investigate in the relevant country, not a reason to assume that every high-ranking economy has the same economic model.

Ireland is a well-documented example of the distinction. Its Central Statistics Office publishes modified gross national income, or GNI*, to remove specified globalisation effects that can distort conventional aggregates. That alternative does not replace GDP in this table, but it explains why Ireland’s GDP per capita should not be interpreted as the income available to an average Irish household.

Compare nominal output and purchasing power

The first column converts output using market exchange rates. The PPP column adjusts for differences in price levels and uses international dollars, a statistical unit. An international dollar is not a currency that can be exchanged at a bank. Both columns use 2024, and neither is calculated by dividing old GDP by today’s population.

Sorting the PPP column may move countries relative to their nominal positions. The table preserves the nominal base rank so the two orderings are not confused. A missing PPP observation remains a dash; substituting a different year would make the comparison look more complete while reducing its consistency.

Why this is not an average salary

GDP includes production associated with businesses and government as well as households. It is divided by all residents, including children and people outside paid employment. It therefore differs from wages per worker, disposable household income and the median income of an individual.

The distinction between a mean and a median matters too. Even a correctly measured average income can rise while the typical household experiences little change if gains are concentrated. A GDP-per-capita figure has the additional limitation that it is an output measure in the first place. Dividing it by twelve does not produce an expected monthly paycheck.

For living standards, combine output with household income distribution, public services and local price levels. A high nominal figure can coexist with expensive housing. PPP improves international purchasing-power comparisons but still does not capture the spending pattern of a specific household or city.

Compare two countries with the same yardstick

Compare two countries

Ireland: 112,895 US$ of GDP per person. United States: 86,170 US$ of GDP per person. Ireland’s figure is 1.31 times United States’s.

Both values use the same measure and reference period as the main table. A ratio describes the figures, not the quality of life in either country.

The ratio compares annual output per resident, using the same nominal measure and year. It does not predict how much more a particular worker would earn after moving. For that decision, occupation, taxes, household composition and location would need their own evidence.

At the other end of this same series, the poorest countries comparison shows how nominal and PPP rankings differ among low-output economies. Keeping both ends on one series makes the comparison reproducible and avoids switching measures to produce a more striking headline.
