The country table is alphabetical, with July 2026 population projections for context. It is a membership list, not the top 19 countries selected by GDP. Population can be sorted to explore the different scales of member countries, but it does not determine eligibility or voting weight.

These country members together contain about 4.77 billion people, or 57.5% of the UN world total for 2026. This calculation covers the 19 countries only. It deliberately does not claim to describe everyone represented through the two regional organizations.

Why the EU and African Union need separate treatment

The European Union and African Union participate as regional organizations. They are not two additional sovereign countries, so giving them invented country capitals or inserting them into a country-population ranking would confuse the unit of comparison.

The membership types also overlap. France, Germany and Italy are individual G20 members and EU members. South Africa is an individual G20 member and an African Union member. Adding the organizations’ entire populations to the 19 country totals would count some people twice.

A population share for all represented countries would require a deduplicated set of countries, a stated territorial convention and a common population year. Broad claims about the G20’s share of GDP or trade need the same discipline. This page reports only the narrower population calculation that can be reproduced directly from the table.

Membership is different from a summit invitation

Presidencies invite additional countries and organizations to meetings. A guest’s presence at a summit does not automatically create permanent membership, just as a member’s absence from a particular meeting does not by itself remove that country from the standing list.

This distinction matters when reading news about a specific year’s event. A photograph, invitation announcement or seating list describes participation in that meeting. To answer who belongs to the group, use the published membership framework and check whether a formal change has been announced.

The G20 also works through meetings and policy processes beyond the leaders’ summit. The annual presidency and its programme change, while the membership list is a different institutional question. This guide is not an event attendance schedule.

Why the G20 is not a mechanical GDP league table

The group brings together major economies and regional representation. It does not recalculate its membership each year by sorting national accounts. Some economies with substantial output participate through a regional body or as invited guests rather than as individual country members.

For a numerical comparison of economic size, use our nominal GDP ranking. For output per resident, use GDP per capita. Those rankings may put countries in a very different order because they answer statistical questions rather than identify a diplomatic grouping.

The result is a useful separation of questions: this list tells you who has standing membership; the economy pages compare measured output; official presidency announcements explain who is invited to a particular meeting.
