The smallest countries in the world

Vatican City is the smallest country, with 0.44 km² reported by the state itself. But a tiny territory is not always an island, a small population, or an isolated place. Compare the land footprints and explore what the ranking actually measures.

The ten smallest, located

Vatican City and Monaco are unusually small even within this group. Together their land areas amount to just 2.524 km². The next entry, Nauru, has 20 km² in the selected series. Moving only a few positions down the table therefore multiplies the land footprint considerably.

The first ten include European microstates as well as island countries in the Pacific, Caribbean, Indian Ocean and Mediterranean. San Marino and Liechtenstein show that a small state need not be an island. The Maldives and Marshall Islands show why an archipelago’s scattered extent at sea can look much larger on a map than its combined dry land.

Area figures for very small countries are especially sensitive to rounding. This source records some island areas in tens of square kilometres, while Monaco’s observation has finer precision. The display preserves what the source supplies; an extra decimal place would not make a rounded input more accurate. The comparisons below use these reported footprints rather than treating the locator-map sizes as proportional.

These cards follow the land-area ranking below. The locator maps give geographic context; each is drawn at its own scale. Use the footprint tool to make an actual size comparison.

How small is small?

Map thumbnails often make countries look similar in size because each outline fills its own frame. Here, the squares use a shared area scale. Doubling a square’s width multiplies its area by four, so square-root scaling is essential for an honest comparison.

The ten smallest countries together occupy 1,330.524 km² in these source records. That is a calculation from the selected areas, not a measurement of one continuous place: their land is scattered across Europe, the Pacific, the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean.

Compare land footprints

Vatican City: 0.440 km² of land. Monaco: 2.084 km² of land. Vatican City’s figure is 0.21 times Monaco’s.

Squares share one area scale; they show relative size, not country outlines. Tiny squares can be almost invisible when compared with a very large country.

Countries ranked by land area

The table uses land area, excluding inland water. Population is included only as context and uses a different reference date. Filter to countries below 1,000 km² to focus on microstates without treating that threshold as an official definition.

Smallest land areas first: WDI 2023, plus Vatican City’s official 0.44 km².

Precision is not uniform. This FAO/WDI snapshot reports rounded land areas of 20 km² for Nauru and 30 km² for Tuvalu. More detailed national or total-area references may show different figures. Decimal formatting does not make a rounded source measurement more precise.

Country, territory, island: three different things

A country can occupy a whole island, part of an island, many islands, or a small parcel within another country. Vatican City and San Marino are surrounded by Italy; Monaco has a coastline and a land border with France. Their small size does not make them dependent territories.

Conversely, a place can have its own flag, government and recognizable identity without being a separate sovereign country in this directory. Gibraltar, Bermuda and Tokelau belong in a clearly labeled territory comparison. Mixing them into a country-only list changes both the count and the positions.

Why not include territorial waters?

A maritime jurisdiction measures a different kind of space. Including an exclusive economic zone can make an island country’s ocean area enormous relative to its dry land. This ranking answers how much land a country has, not how much ocean it administers or how far its islands extend.

Why do “smallest country” lists disagree?

First check whether they rank land or total area. Then check whether they include territories. Finally, inspect the source date and precision: reclamation, changing shorelines and revised surveys can alter reported areas. On very small territories, a modest absolute revision can be a large percentage change.

Is the smallest country also the least populated?

Vatican City heads both of our lists, but the remaining order differs. Dense urban states can have more residents than much larger island countries. Use the population ranking when the question is about people rather than space.

Sources & methodology

Land areas are sorted before rounding. WDI land records are labeled 2023; the independently sourced Vatican figure is not presented as a 2023 WDI observation. Taiwan has no observation in this selected series and is omitted. The population column is drawn from our separate UN projection dataset and never enters the area calculation.

  1. World Bank / FAO: land area, 2023

One consistent land-area series for 194 country profiles. Source precision varies, including rounded figures for small islands.

  2. Vatican City State: geography

The state reports 0.44 km² (44 hectares). Used explicitly because Vatican City is absent from the WDI series.

  3. UN World Population Prospects 2024, revision 1

The population column is a separate 1 July 2026 medium-variant projection. Population does not determine this ranking.

Country lists follow our 196-profile directory convention: 193 UN members, Vatican City, Palestine and Taiwan. Dependent territories are identified separately. A missing observation never means zero.
