The flag of Cape Verde was adopted on September 22, 1992, replacing the earlier pan-African-inspired flag used since independence in 1975. It shows a dark blue field covering most of the flag, with two narrow horizontal stripes, white above red, set slightly below center. Above these stripes, offset toward the hoist side, sits a circle of ten yellow five-pointed stars representing the archipelago's ten main islands.

Blue symbolizes the Atlantic Ocean surrounding the country and the boundless sky, reflecting the nation's island character. The white and red stripes stand for peace and the effort of the Cape Verdean people, respectively. The circular arrangement of the stars evokes the unity among the islands.
