Meaning and history of the flag of Grenada

Grenada's flag was adopted on February 7, 1974, upon independence from the United Kingdom. It has a vivid, intricate design: a red border runs around the entire flag, with three yellow five-pointed stars along the top edge and three along the bottom. The interior is divided diagonally into an X formed by two yellow triangles (top and bottom) and two green triangles (sides), with a red circle at the center holding a yellow star.

The green triangle nearest the hoist bears an image of a nutmeg pod, reflecting Grenada's nickname, the Isle of Spice. Grenada is one of the world's leading producers of nutmeg, and the crop is so central to national identity that it earned a place on the flag. The seven stars represent the country's seven parishes. Red, yellow, and green are the pan-African colors.

The flag's design is among the most elaborate and geometrically complex of any Caribbean nation. The combination of the diagonal X, the star-studded border, and the central circle creates a visually striking pattern symbolizing the dynamism and vitality of the Grenadian people.
