Meaning and history of the flag of Pakistan

Pakistan's flag is dark green over roughly three-quarters of its field, with a white vertical stripe at the hoist representing the country's non-Muslim religious minorities. On the green field sit a white crescent moon and a white five-pointed star, both traditional symbols of Islam.

Green represents the country's Muslim majority and is a color historically associated with Islam. The crescent symbolizes progress, and the star represents the light of knowledge. The flag was designed by Syed Amir-ud-Din Kidwai and adopted on August 11, 1947, three days before Pakistan's independence from British rule. Its design is based on the flag of the Muslim League, the political party that led the movement to create an independent state for the Muslims of the Indian subcontinent.
