Meaning and history of the flag of the Comoros

The current flag of the Comoros was adopted on January 7, 2002. It features four equal horizontal stripes of yellow, white, red, and blue from top to bottom, along with a green triangle at the hoist. Inside the triangle sits a white crescent moon and four white five-pointed stars arranged vertically between its two points.

The four stripes and the four stars represent the archipelago's four main islands: Ngazidja (Grande Comore), Mwali (Mohéli), Ndzuani (Anjouan), and Mahoré (Mayotte), though the latter remains under French administration. The crescent moon is a symbol of Islam, the country's majority religion, and the green of the triangle is likewise associated with Islam. Since gaining independence in 1975, the Comoros has changed its flag numerous times, reflecting the archipelago's political instability. The current design aims to represent the unity of all the islands and the country's cultural diversity.
