Meaning and history of the flag of Micronesia

The flag of the Federated States of Micronesia has a light blue field with four white five-pointed stars arranged in a diamond at the center. It was adopted on November 30, 1978, when the country established its constitutional government as a state in free association with the United States.

The blue field represents the vast Pacific Ocean that surrounds and defines the Micronesian archipelago. The four stars symbolize the four states that make up the federation: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae. The diamond arrangement evokes the Southern Cross, an important constellation for navigation across the Pacific, even though Micronesia itself lies in the northern hemisphere.

Micronesia's flag design closely resembles those of other Pacific nations that use blue fields with stars, such as Nauru's flag and the former flag of the Marshall Islands. Its simplicity and elegance reflect the close relationship of the Micronesian people with the sea. The change from three stars to four marked Kosrae's emergence as its own state within the federation, having split off from Pohnpei.
