Meaning and history of the flag of Armenia

The flag of Armenia is made up of three equal horizontal stripes of red, blue, and orange, from top to bottom. Red symbolizes the blood shed by Armenian soldiers defending their homeland, blue represents the Armenian sky and the people's wish to live under peaceful skies, and orange embodies the nation's creativity and industrious character.

The tricolor was first adopted during the short-lived Democratic Republic of Armenia (1918-1920), the first independent Armenian state of the modern era. After incorporation into the Soviet Union it was replaced by various Soviet-era flags. With the dissolution of the USSR, Armenia restored the tricolor on August 24, 1990, shortly before formally declaring independence in 1991.

The shade of orange, sometimes described as apricot, is especially meaningful, since the apricot is considered Armenia's national fruit. The red-blue-orange combination is unique among the world's national flags, making it easy to recognize. Unlike many flags from the Caucasus region, it carries no religious symbols or emblems, keeping a sober, elegant design that ties directly back to the first Armenian republic.
