Meaning and history of the flag of Palestine

The flag of Palestine consists of three equal horizontal stripes — black, white, and green, from top to bottom — with a red triangle at the hoist extending toward the center of the flag. These four colors are the pan-Arab colors and carry deep historical significance tied to Arab dynasties: black represents the Abbasid Caliphate, white the Umayyad Caliphate, green the Fatimid Caliphate, and red the Hashemite dynasty.

This flag was adopted by the Palestine Liberation Organization in 1964 and is internationally recognized as the symbol of the Palestinian people. Its design is based directly on the flag of the 1916 Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire, making it nearly identical to the flags of Jordan and Sudan, and quite similar to those of other Arab countries such as Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. The main difference from Jordan's flag is that the latter includes a white seven-pointed star within the red triangle.
