Meaning and history of the flag of Sudan

The flag of Sudan has three equal horizontal stripes of red, white, and black, from top to bottom, with a green triangle at the hoist. The design uses the four pan-Arab colors, reflecting the country's Arab-Muslim identity.

It was adopted on May 20, 1970. Red symbolizes the struggle and the martyrs of independence, white represents peace, light, and optimism, black embodies Sudan itself (the name "Sudan" derives from the Arabic phrase "bilad al-sudan," meaning "land of the Blacks") and also references the flag of the Mahdist movement. The green triangle symbolizes agricultural prosperity and Islam. The flag closely resembles those of other Arab countries such as Palestine, Jordan, and Kuwait, which share the pan-Arab colors, though Sudan's specific arrangement with the green triangle sets it apart. After South Sudan's independence in 2011, Sudan kept its flag unchanged.
