Meaning and history of the flag of Kuwait

Kuwait's flag is made up of three horizontal stripes of equal width, green over white over red, with a black trapezoid along the hoist side overlapping all three bands. The colors are the classic pan-Arab palette: green stands for the fertility of the land, white for purity and noble deeds, red for the blood of enemies spilled in battle, and black for the defeat of adversaries on the battlefield.

The flag was adopted on September 7, 1961, after Kuwait's independence from British protectorate status. The colors were inspired by a poem by the Arab poet Safi al-Din al-Hilli, who described Arab exploits using these same four colors. Before 1961, Kuwait flew a red flag bearing the country's name in white script, in the style common to the Persian Gulf emirates under British influence.

Kuwait's flag shares the pan-Arab colors with several Arab nations, including Jordan, Palestine, Sudan, and Iraq, but it stands out for the trapezoidal black area along the hoist, an unusual geometric feature in vexillology. During the Iraqi invasion of 1990-1991, the Kuwaiti flag became a powerful symbol of resistance and national sovereignty. Its design later influenced the flag of the United Arab Emirates, which also uses the four pan-Arab colors.
