Meaning and history of the flag of Nicaragua

Nicaragua's flag has three horizontal stripes of equal width: cobalt blue at the top, white in the middle, and cobalt blue at the bottom. At the center of the white stripe sits the national coat of arms, showing an equilateral triangle with five volcanoes, a rainbow, and a Phrygian cap emitting rays of light, surrounded by the inscription "República de Nicaragua - América Central."

The blue stripes represent the two oceans bordering Nicaragua's coasts: the Pacific and the Atlantic (Caribbean). White symbolizes peace. The five volcanoes on the coat of arms represent the five original nations of the Central American Federation. The Phrygian cap is a universal symbol of liberty, and the rainbow evokes peace. The equilateral triangle symbolizes equality.

Nicaragua's flag shares its origins with those of El Salvador and Honduras, all derived from the flag of the United Provinces of Central America. All three use blue-white-blue stripes, which can lead to confusion. The main differences lie in the central coats of arms and the exact shades of blue. Nicaragua's flag is also one of the few in the world to contain the color purple, present in the rainbow on its coat of arms — a notable feature given how historically difficult purple dyes were to produce.
