Meaning and history of the flag of Honduras

Honduras's flag consists of three horizontal stripes: turquoise blue at the top and bottom, with a white stripe in the middle. Five blue five-pointed stars are arranged in an X pattern at the center of the white stripe. The blue stripes represent the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea bordering the country, while the white stripe symbolizes peace and prosperity.

The five central stars represent the five countries that made up the former Federal Republic of Central America: Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. This historical reference reflects the unionist ideal Honduras has maintained throughout its history. The design was officially adopted on February 16, 1866, though its origins trace back to the flag of the United Provinces of Central America.

Honduras's flag closely resembles those of El Salvador and Nicaragua, since all three nations share the legacy of the Central American federation and use blue and white stripes.
