Meaning and history of the flag of Estonia

Estonia's flag consists of three equal horizontal stripes of blue, black, and white from top to bottom. It was adopted as a national symbol on November 21, 1918, when Estonia declared independence. The colors were first established in 1884 as the flag of the Estonian Students' Society at the University of Tartu and quickly became a symbol of the national movement.

Blue represents the sky, lakes, and sea surrounding Estonia, as well as the loyalty and faith of the Estonian people. Black symbolizes the homeland, the country's dark forests, and centuries of suffering under foreign rule. White embodies snow, purity, hope, and the aspiration toward freedom and light. This color combination is unusual among national flags and gives the Estonian banner a highly distinctive visual identity.

During the Soviet occupation (1940-1991), the tricolor flag was banned and flying it was punished. It was raised again atop Pikk Hermann tower in Tallinn on February 24, 1989, symbolizing the rebirth of Estonian independence. The official proportions are 7:11, and its somber, understated palette makes it one of Europe's most elegant and recognizable flags.
