Meaning and history of the flag of Andorra

The flag of Andorra consists of three vertical stripes of blue, yellow, and red, with the country's coat of arms placed at the center of the yellow stripe. The quartered shield combines the symbols of the Bishop of Urgell (a miter and crosier), the Count of Foix (three red pales), Catalonia (four red bars on gold), and the Viscount of Béarn (two red cows), reflecting Andorra's historic co-principality under the Bishop of Urgell and the President of France.

The flag's colors combine those of the French tricolor (blue and red) with those of the Catalan and Spanish senyera (yellow and red), representing the dual historical tutelage under which the principality developed. The central yellow stripe is slightly wider than the other two when the coat of arms is included, though simplified versions show all three stripes of equal width.

Without the coat of arms, Andorra's flag is nearly identical to those of Chad, Romania, and Moldova, all vertical tricolors of blue, yellow, and red, a coincidence that has caused diplomatic mix-ups on more than one occasion. The motto on the coat of arms reads 'Virtus Unita Fortior' (united virtue is stronger), and the flag was officially adopted in 1866.
