Meaning and history of the flag of Tajikistan

Tajikistan's flag, adopted on November 24, 1992, following independence from the Soviet Union, consists of three horizontal stripes: red at the top, white in the middle (the widest of the three), and green at the bottom. At the center of the white stripe sits a golden crown encircled by an arc of seven gold five-pointed stars.

Red symbolizes the country's unity and victory, as well as remembrance of the sun. White represents purity, cotton (one of the country's chief agricultural products), and the snow of the Pamir Mountains. Green evokes the fertility of Tajikistan's valleys and its natural landscape, and is also a color associated with Islam, the country's majority religion. The stripes are not of equal width: the central white band is wider than the other two.

The golden crown at the flag's center represents Tajik sovereignty, and its name in Tajik, "toj," is etymologically related to the word "Tajik." The seven surrounding stars symbolize the country's seven historic regions and the number seven, regarded as a symbol of perfection and happiness in Tajik culture. It is one of the few flags in Central Asia that does not feature the Islamic crescent, setting it apart from those of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Pakistan.
