Meaning and history of the flag of Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan's flag is a deep red field with a golden sun of 40 rays at its center. Within the sun's disc is a stylized rendering of the tunduk, the circular crown of a Kyrgyz yurt, shown as if seen from inside. The red field recalls the banner of the national hero Manas the Noble, central figure of the great Kyrgyz epic. The golden sun's 40 rays represent the 40 tribes that Manas united to form the Kyrgyz people.

The flag was adopted on March 3, 1992, following independence from the Soviet Union. The tunduk at the center of the sun carries deep cultural meaning: the yurt is the traditional dwelling of Central Asia's nomadic peoples, and its crown, the tunduk, represents home, the universe, and the connection between earth and sky. The image of the tunduk also appears on the country's currency and other national symbols.

Kyrgyzstan is the only country in the world whose flag depicts the interior of a dwelling as its central element, making it a truly singular design. The red color links it visually to other Central Asian flags, such as Turkey's, though the symbolism is entirely different.
