Meaning and history of the flag of the Seychelles

The flag of Seychelles is one of the most colorful and original in the world. It features five diagonal bands radiating fan-like from the lower hoist corner in blue, yellow, red, white, and green, from bottom to top. This bursting-ray design symbolizes a young nation opening itself to the future with optimism and energy.

It was adopted on June 18, 1996, the third flag the country has flown since gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1976. Blue represents the sky and sea surrounding the archipelago, yellow symbolizes the life-giving warmth of the sun, red embodies the people and their determination to build the future together in unity and love, white represents justice and social harmony, and green stands for the land and the natural environment. The five colors also represented the five main political parties active at the time the flag was adopted. It is a one-of-a-kind design with no equivalent among any other national flag.
