Meaning and history of the flag of Namibia

Namibia's flag is split diagonally from the lower-left corner to the upper-right corner by a red band edged in white. The upper-left triangle is blue and contains a golden sun with twelve rays, while the lower-right triangle is green. It was adopted on March 21, 1990, the day the country gained independence from South Africa.

Blue represents the sky and the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the country's precious water resources. Red symbolizes the Namibian people, their heroism, and their determination to build a future of equality. White evokes peace and unity. Green represents vegetation and agricultural resources. The golden sun and its twelve rays symbolize life and energy, with the rays also representing the country's various ethnic communities.

Namibia's flag is one of the few national flags to use a diagonal division of the field, giving it a dynamic and distinctive look. Its colors come from the flag of SWAPO, the liberation movement that led the country to independence, though additional colors were added to represent the whole nation. The sun in the upper corner sets it apart from any other diagonally divided flag, such as those of the Republic of the Congo or Tanzania.
