Meaning and history of the flag of Oman

Oman's flag has three horizontal stripes of white, red, and green, with a vertical red stripe at the hoist. In the upper-left corner, over the vertical red stripe, sits the national emblem: a traditional Omani dagger (khanjar) crossed with two curved swords. Red is the historic dominant color of the peoples of the Persian Gulf and represents the battles fought to expel foreign invaders.

White symbolizes peace and prosperity, while green represents the country's fertile land and agricultural tradition. The emblem of the dagger and swords is a traditional Omani symbol dating back to the 18th century, reflecting the nation's warrior heritage. This flag was officially adopted on December 17, 1970, when Sultan Qaboos bin Said came to power and modernized the country. It is one of the few flags in the world to feature a bladed weapon as a central design element.
