Meaning and history of the flag of Panama
Panama's flag is divided into four equal rectangular quarters. The upper-left quarter is white with a five-pointed blue star, the upper-right is red, the lower-left is blue, and the lower-right is white with a five-pointed red star. The design was created by the family of Manuel Amador Guerrero, Panama's first president, and was adopted on November 4, 1903, one day after the country's independence from Colombia.
The colors represent the political parties that dominated Panamanian life at the time of independence: red for the Liberal Party and blue for the Conservative Party, while white symbolizes the peace and harmony between the two political forces. The blue star represents purity and honesty, and the red star symbolizes authority and law. It is one of the few Latin American flags that does not use horizontal or vertical stripes, giving it a design that is especially distinctive within the region.
