Meaning and history of the flag of Lesotho

Lesotho's flag has three horizontal stripes: blue at the top, a wider white band in the middle, and green at the bottom. At the center of the white stripe sits a black Basotho hat (mokorotlo), the traditional conical headwear of the Basotho people. Blue represents rain and the sky, white stands for peace, and green embodies prosperity and the fertility of the land. The national motto, "Khotso, Pula, Nala" (Peace, Rain, Prosperity), is reflected directly in these three colors.

The current flag was adopted on October 4, 2006, marking the 40th anniversary of Lesotho's independence from the United Kingdom. It replaced an earlier 1987 flag that displayed a shield with traditional weapons and a crocodile. The 2006 redesign sought a symbol of peace and stability after years of political turbulence, dropping the weaponry from the previous design to project a more peaceful image.

The black mokorotlo is the most distinctive feature of Lesotho's flag and makes it instantly recognizable among African flags. It is one of the few flags in the world to feature an item of clothing as its central symbol. The conical hat's silhouette is so iconic that it also appears on the country's license plates and coins.
